Pre-requisites: All attendees must be proficient in either the Macintosh or Windows environments. The course expects all attendees to be familiar with the component features used and covered in the introductory and intermediate levels course before progressing onto this level.

Objectives: On completion of this course delegates will be able to confidently enhance tonal and colour values in bitmap images, whatever their origin or condition. As an attendee on this course you will gain hands-on experience in correcting a range of associated image problems and in so doing will learn how to make the best use of Photoshop’s range of powerful adjustment controls.

Who should attend: This course will be of benefit to a range of different user types. If you work with Photoshop and are responsible for correct colour output, then this is the course for you.

Overview of Content

Images: Colour and perception. Colour and print reproduction. Image qualities: acceptable and unacceptable.

Fundamentals: Working in RGB rather than CMYK. Advantages of working in 48-bit. Use of CMYK/gamut warning previews. Use of adjustment layers. Scanning metaphor. Order of working.

Image sharpness & Noise: Dealing with image noise. Dealing with lack of sharpness. Dealing with low/high saturation.

Overview of Photoshop controls: Adjustment controls: their purpose. Info palette: its purpose and use.

Colour Correction exercises including: Correcting tones. Correcting colour balance. Working with high and low key images. Removing colour casts. Dealing with missing channel data.

Histogram: Its purpose and use. Use of Colour Samplers. Levels control: its purpose and use. Auto level/contrast controls. Black and White eyedroppers. Grey eyedropper: its purpose and use. Curves control: its purpose and use. Colour balance control: its purpose and use. Hue, Saturation and Brightness control: its purpose and use. Selective colour control: its purpose and use. Channel palette: its purpose and use. Channel mixer control: its purpose and use. Best practice when using the above controls.
